Why Visit the High Atlas Mountians in Morocco

Why Visit the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco?

Morocco – a name that evokes visions of bustling souks, aromatic spices, refreshing mint tea, and the expansive vistas of the Sahara Desert. Yet, for those seeking a deeper connection with the country’s rich traditions and authentic culture, the High Atlas Mountains await. Here, amidst North Africa’s most secluded and ancient villages, you can immerse yourself in the true essence of Moroccan life, far from the beaten path.

At Adventurous Ewe, we’ve had the privilege of exploring the High Atlas Mountains for over 15 years, forging bonds and friendships with local mountain communities that have grown into deep, familial connections. From local shopkeepers, to café owners, to taxi drivers and guesthouse staff. Alongside our local tour operator, who started their journey in adventure travel at the same time as us, we have grown together, building a network that feels like family. This deep-rooted connection enriches every journey we offer through these majestic landscapes. In 2024, we invite you to discover this unparalleled region where adventure meets heritage. The High Atlas not only offers breathtaking scenery—from the soaring peaks to the valleys in full bloom with cherry and almond orchards — it also provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich Berber culture and connect with the warm-hearted locals who welcome every visitor as if they were family. It’s not unusual to be invited in to someone’s house for a cup of freshly brewed tea and a chat.

Why Visit Morocco

Following the devasting earthquake, we are inspired and humbled by the Berber people in the High Atlas Mountains as they pulled together to rebuild their infrastructure, houses, communities and lives. Together with the tremendous support from our Adventurous Ewe community, we rallied to provide a helpful amount of kit donations for the people affected by this earthquake in the remote mountain villages. We felt it was the very least we could do given the support and warm hospitality these villages have always provided to us over the many years. Their deep passion for the High Atlas Mountains, extensive knowledge of the region, welcoming spirit and heartwarming friendships are invaluable. The sense of togetherness runs deep. From this we strongly encourage you to experience a land of timeless beauty, rich culture and warm hospitality, where you can step into another world that is only a short hop from the UK and support the remote communities as they continue to rebuild their lives.

Eve Branson Foundation

Earlier this year we were delighted to take one of our Mt Toubkal trekking teams to visit the Tamgounssi Weaving Centre where they observed first-hand the positive impact of The Eve Branson Foundation in the High Atlas Mountain communities. Meeting Fatima, the Manager of the EBF, the team witnessed local women being trained in weaving, rug-making, and embroidery. We were all enthralled by the quality of the handicrafts from hand-made scarfs, shawls, bags and so much more. These programs, provided free of charge, aim to empower individuals of all ages with access to teaching, materials, and equipment five days a week. The ultimate goal is to create high-quality handmade crafts that blend traditional designs with contemporary Moroccan style, generating a sustainable income by selling these items to visitors.

The Toubkal team were also treated to a visit of the Community & Study Centre for young people aged 6 to 18. Located near the former secondary school in Asni, the study centre project has been part of the EBF’s efforts to rebuild after last year’s devasting earthquake. Our local tour operator together with the community have played a pivotal role in this reconstruction alongside the EBF. Adjacent to the centre, temporary school tarpaulins have been set up, relocating primary school children, and plans are in motion for a new playground for the damaged crèche at Tifaouine. Here we gifted arts and crafts items to support pre-school and primary school children, including those currently living in tents without access to schooling.
