This striking shoreline, encompassing 185 million years of the Earth’s history, means you can trek many millions of years in geological time as you cover 22 miles in just one day.

With a more recent history of mining, shipwrecks and smuggling, this is a fascinating stretch of coastline. Your trekking adventure will take in some of its most spectacular scenery. Starting near the renowned natural stone archway of Durdle Door to the picturesque Lulworth Cove, your route climbs and descends the steep hills of the Jurassic Coast for 21 miles before reaching the finish in the coastal town of Swanage.

Day 1

Lulworth Cove to Swanage – approx 21 mile trek

After an early start you will leave West Lulworth near the iconic Lulworth Cove for the start of your 21 mile trekking challenge. Your route follows the coast line all the way to the sea.

Traversing a lengthy stretch of rugged terrain towards the end of the South West Coast Path, the Lulworth Cove to Swanage segment of this famous long distance walk will expose you to the challenging landscape and stunning views that can be found along the Dorset Coast. There is a large amount of elevation gain spread throughout this route

You will make your way up the steep hillside to the northeast to skirt around the cove before descending towards the Fossil Forest that offers a great window into the geological history of the region. Walking along the water’s edge, you will traverse the undulating landscape and make your way through a series of climbs and descents that are sure to give your legs a great workout.

After travelling around St Alban’s Head and taking in the breath-taking views across the English Channel, you will follow the trail to the east along the rugged coast before turning north through the Durlston Country Park to pass by the historic Durlston Castle. From here, it is a relatively short stretch along the shoreline that will bring you to the end point of your epic trek in Swanage.

A toast of celebratory bubbles will be served to commend your great achievements with your team-mates.

We recommend trekkers stay the night in Swanage following such a long day of hiking.

Trip grading

The Jurassic Coast Trek is graded as a ‘Tough’ challenge given you will be trekking along the undulating coastline of the Jurassic Coast.

There are some steep ascents and descents on uneven terrain plus covering 21 miles in distance makes for a challenging one-day hike.

Weather conditions can be a major influence on this trek as well giving it’s coastal location, strong sea breezes can be a factor. However, training, preparation, quality kit and a good dose of gritty determination & endurance will see you get the most enjoyment and reward from this event.

Please check the Met Office weather forecast prior to your trek so you are sufficiently prepared.

For training info and support please visit our Training & Kit webpage.
