#1. Mt Triglav, Slovenia
Length of trip: 3 days
Ground cost: from £470pp
Mountain: Mt Triglav, 2864m, Slovenia’s highest peak
Let’s start our Top 7 Summits in 5 days with Slovenia’s pride and joy – Mt Triglav. Standing tall at 2864m, it is the highest peak in Slovenia and the Julian Alps, and is even featured on Slovenia’s flag! Climbing Triglav is something of a Slovenian tradition and is a rite of passage for many.
The climb itself is not overly technical, but it does require a bit of fitness and a sense of adventure. You’ll be equipped with via ferrata gear and get to practice your scrambling skills under the guidance of a local IFMGA certified mountain guide.
On the ascent, you’ll witness stunning views of Austria’s highest mountains in the north, the Adriatic sea in the south, and the Italian Dolomites in the west. If you’re lucky, you may witness a quirky traditional custom: a thwack on the buttocks of successful summiteers with a birch branch, or in its absence, a climbing rope. This is just one of the many things that make climbing Triglav a unique and memorable experience.
