Trekking the Sahara: My First Desert Adventure Awaits

By Jenny Haynes, Adventure Travel Consultant at Adventurous Ewe

As I prepare to embark on my first Sahara Desert Trek this November, excitement and anticipation are running high. This trek isn’t just any journey; it’s an incredible adventure organised by Adventurous Ewe. Furthermore while we run this trek each year independently, this year we’re collaborating with IAPWA, StreetVet, and St. David’s Hospice (2025). These treks offer not only the chance to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Sahara but unquestionably the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by supporting these worthy causes. Less than three months to go!

The Sahara Desert Treks

We’re offering a few different treks through the Sahara Desert in 2024/25, each with its own unique focus:

  • Sahara Desert Trek (Jan, Feb, Mar, Nov 2025): This classic 8-day adventure takes us deep into the heart of the desert, trekking across dunes and sleeping under the stars. It’s perfect for anyone looking to experience the Sahara’s raw beauty and tranquillity.
  • IAPWA & StreetVet Sahara Desert Trek (Nov 2024): This trek combines the thrill of desert trekking with the mission of supporting animal welfare and veterinary care for street animals. Every step we take will contribute to a better life for these animals, making the experience even more rewarding.
  • St David’s Hospice Sahara Desert Trek (Nov 2025): This trek is all about community, compassion, and raising funds for St. David’s Hospice. Each mile we walk will be a tribute to the incredible work they do in providing care and comfort to those in need.

Why the Sahara Desert?

So why the Sahara, you might ask? For someone used to hiking the Yorkshire Moors or scrambling up a Wainwright with my adventurous dog, Maya, the Sahara desert represents something entirely different. It’s a vast, golden expanse of sand that tests your endurance and survival skills under extreme conditions.

Firstly, a huge appeal is that our trek will be guided by local Berber experts. These guides are treasure troves of knowledge, with deep insights into the geography and history of their homeland. They’ll share stories of their ancestors and introduce us to survival strategies developed over centuries. This is not only reassuring but also enriching, something Adventurous Ewe really focuses on during our adventures.

Secondly, the journey will be in a small group, following less-trodden paths. The main reason I go to the deepest mountains in the UK is to experience solitude, and the desert offers the same. The path, carefully crafted, will take us through broad plains and dramatic plateaus, past tamarisk bushes and acacia trees. We’ll explore hidden villages and navigate palm-filled gorges, walking over ancient, dried-up river beds that hint at the region’s dynamic climate history. The desert, constantly reshaped by wind and sand, is a testament to the Sahara’s ever-changing nature.

Top 10 reason to trek the Sahara

What’s Included in the Trek

The trek is designed to be a seamless experience, with everything you need to focus on the adventure itself. From accommodation in traditional Moroccan riads to all meals during the trek, camel support for transporting your main kit, and even a cultural night with local Berbers – Adventurous Ewe thinks of everything. Our expert Moroccan Leader, Rashid, will be guiding us through the desert, ensuring that every moment is as safe as it is unforgettable. So it’s a real honour to be included in this trek.

Preparing for the Sahara Desert

Preparation is key for any adventure, but desert trekking requires a whole new level of readiness. So, in light of this, our founder Jim Young at Adventurous Ewe shares 10 invaluable tips that I’m taking to heart:

  1. Look after your feet: blister prevention https://www.fixingyourfeet.com/Prevention-Tips/. Ensure you have suitable, well worn in hiking boots. Consider wearing gaiters: to prevent sand and debris entering your boots.
  2. Pack light but smart: Every ounce counts when trekking in the heat. Bring essentials like a good-quality hat, sunglasses, and lightweight, breathable clothing. A scarf or buff is invaluable for protection against sand and sun.
  3. Have a spare buff: You can wet it to wear around your neck if you feel the heat. Or buy a cooling spray or handheld fan. Plus, use and reapply plenty of sunscreen and lip balm for after-sun care.
  4. Don’t miss the sunset and sunrise: It’s worth climbing out of your sleeping bag early to watch the magical sunrise over the desert landscape.
  5. Accept and embrace the dirt: You’ll get grubby, and no one minds!
  6. Engage with local culture: The Sahara is home to various nomadic communities. Learn from your guides, experience their way of life, and embrace their traditions.
  7. Keep hydrated and bring electrolytes: Try these beforehand to ensure you like them. Use a CamelBak or hydration bladder system, making water more accessible and refillable while trekking.
  8. Bring comfy shoes for campsites: Crocs are ideal, allowing your feet to breathe while protecting them on sometimes stony terrain.
  9. Prepare for cold nights: Desert temperatures can drop sharply. Bring warm layers, a good sleeping bag, and consider a thermal liner for extra comfort.
  10. Finally, embrace the experience: The Sahara’s vast, silent expanse is unlike any other place. Disconnect from technology, soak in the serenity, and fully immerse yourself in this unique adventure.

Trekking the Sahara is as much about the mental journey as it is the physical one. Embrace every moment, and let the desert’s timelessness leave a lasting impression. For more tips from Jim please read his most recent blog.

Whether you’re following along from home or considering joining us on a future trek, I hope to give you a taste of what it’s like to walk through the Sahara Desert. Without doubt, this adventure is as much about the people you meet and the experiences you share as it is about the breathtaking landscapes you encounter.
