Overview

Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Caribbean on the other, Costa Rica is a small country that packs a lot in. A diverse and awe-inspiring fusion of high mountains & volcanoes, vast virgin rainforests, stunning coastlines, roaring rivers and home to half a million animal species. Impressively around 25% of the country’s landmass has been set aside as protected reserves, the largest percentage of protected area anywhere in the world. Costa Rica certainly positions itself for the ultimate epic adventure in the heart of Central America.

Now’s your chance to embark on this exciting Costa Rica self-powered adventure as you bike, hike and paddle160km across Costa Rica from the Irazu Volcano to the Caribbean. Your journey will take you under thriving jungle canopies, the verdant hills and large farming communities of San Rafael, swooshing along the beautiful Pacuare River, through remote and friendly mountain villages and out to the other side to the Caribbean Sea. All whilst trying to catch a glimpse of some remarkable wildlife, sleeping under a vast blanket of star filled skies and using all your strength and determination to complete this incredible journey under your very own steam.

Our Costa Rica Journey to the sea itinerary has been carefully designed in association with our fantastic local team who completed the first coast to coast crossing of Costa Rica in 1996. Your adventure will be fully supported by a qualified UK Mountain, Bike & Kayak Guide together with your local Costa Rican team.

After some time to explore the lunar like craters of the volcano you’ll begin the first mountain bike section of the trip with a 40km ride. The first part of the route takes you across the saddle that connects the Irazú Volcano with the Turrialba Volcano. The Turrialba Volcano is quite active and it is common to see smoke coming out of its crater. You’ll pass a few kilometers from the crater then begin a long descent past several dairy and vegetable farms on our way down the volcano.

Tonight you’ll stay in the clouds, halfway down the Turrialba Volcano at the very comfortable San Rafael Camp

Day 3
San Rafael to Pacuare River

Your day starts with a 30km mountain bike ride towards the white-water rafting start at La Cruz, the gateway to the Pacuare River. Here you will have lunch before embarking on a rafting journey through pristine rainforest spotted with waterfalls.

The Pacuare is the most scenic rafting river in Costa Rica and one of the world’s classic white-water rafting experiences. In the afternoon you will arrive at your riverside camp, El Nido del Tigre. Nestled between the sounds of the rainforest and the hum of the river you can explore this lush environment and look out for wildlife such as toucans, sloths and more. Spacious tents on fixed platforms board the edge of the river and nestle in the surrounding forest. The camp is fully functional with its own supply of pure spring water, shower and sanitary facilities. The name of the camp, El Nido del Tigre, comes from the giant patches of ginger plants that carpet the main floor of the main area of camp. When the ginger reaches a certain height it falls over creating flattened areas in the shape of a tiger’s paw – hence its name, which translates to ‘the nest of the tiger’. From the centre of the nest, trails radiate throughout the forest and along the river. There is an open area for those who are up for a game of ball or frisbee or you can seek out a quiet area and enjoy a refreshing drink, read a book or snooze away in a hammock.

San Rafael to Pacuare River

Trek 5km
Raft 10km

Day 4
Pacuare River

Today you have the chance to spend some quality time in this unique location on the banks of the Pacuare River. This area of rainforest is maintained as much as possible in its natural state. From the centre of camp, the trails radiate out to secret areas of the rainforest. The trekking route takes you hiking over the hills, exploring primary forest, swimming in the Pacuare, exploring waterfalls and swimming holes with water so pure you can drink it (most of the year). Tonight you will spend your second night in the stunning El Nido del Tigre which is named after the giant ginger plants carpeting the area around the campsite.

Included

Accommodation: El Nido del Tigre camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5
Pacuare River to Caribbean Lowlands

Today the Pacuare rafting journey of 25kms takes you through virgin rainforest, cascading waterfalls and river carved canyons. The rafts maneuver through the exhilarating rapids and in gentler sections you can see into the rainforest at the river’s edge. Along the way time out is taken to do some hiking to spectacular waterfalls and to enjoy lunch on the shore. At last, in the late afternoon, you’ll reach the end of your rafting journey at the banana plantations at Finca Pacuarito. Here you will camp at Finca Pacuarito rest for the night.

Included

Accommodation: Camping
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6
Caribbean Lowlands to the Caribbean coast

THE SWEET TASTE OF SUCCESS…This morning you will jump back in the saddle of your bike for the final time for a 35km ride through banana plantations to the town of Freeman. Here is where you’ll begin the final leg with a 10km kayak down the Pacuare leaving the rapids behind as the river eases into the Caribbean lowlands where banana plantations gradually swallow the receding rainforest. The river slows to a tranquil pace as you paddle the last mile of the river, completing the mosaic of the landscapes you have experienced.

At the end of the adventure, you’ll reach the mouth of the Pacuare as it meets the Caribbean Sea, celebrating your passage, while enjoying a well-deserved rest.

After time on the beach you will then be picked up by a motorboat and transferred to Moin. Here you will then be transferred to the beach filled with a huge sense of achievement and ready to celebrate your fantastic achievement.

Sustainable and Responsible Travel

Impressively around 25% of Costa Rica’s landmass has been set aside as protected reserves, the largest percentage of protected area anywhere in the world. Costa Rica is known for its sustainable methods and peaceful attitude. The small Central American nation is consistently making headlines for its ground-breaking movements to protect the environment, without forsaking its people’s happiness in the process.

As a tour operator, we actively strive to support such forward thinking countries to help drive their tourism economy and hence, the local people and communities involved. Here are some of the reasons why Costa Rica is one of the most sustainable travel destinations you may ever have the privilege to visit.

Renewable energy

Costa Rica was almost exclusively (99.62%) powered by renewable energy in 2019, a remarkable feat considering the country is still technically a developing nation. Investing heavily into hydropower, solar power and wind power, alongside the assistance of six volcanoes for geothermal energy, has facilitated this milestone achievement. The country aims to be carbon neutral by 2025 and looks set to achieve this goal.

Reforestation

Costa Rica has managed to increase forest cover by 30% over the last 30 years. Only South Korea and Costa Rica have been able to reverse the worldwide trend of deforestation, a hugely commendable achievement. This is largely due to a government scheme providing farmers with grants for every hectare of rainforest they preserve. This is particularly important for farmland that is between national parks, creating buffer zones for wildlife travelling between the parks.

Farmers are also rewarded for sustainable practices and for replanting forest. Costa Rica puts a price tag on environmental services provided by rainforests, not just tourism, and this has proven very successful.

No to plastic

Costa Rica is already a pioneer when it comes to reducing single-use plastic and is taking dramatic action against plastic waste with a plan to ban all single-use plastics by 2021. This includes straws, bottles, cutlery, cups and bags.

The government is offering incentives to businesses, as well as investing in research into alternatives to single-use plastics in order to achieve its goal.

To help eliminate our plastic footprint in such a pristine and green destination, when you book on this adventure you well receive a complimentary Adventurous Ewe Water-To-Go Bottle to help with our mission below:

  • Protect our planet by offering an environmentally friendly reusable water bottles as an alternative to single-use plastic bottles
  • Protect your health and well-being by offering safe, healthy water anywhere in the world
  • Protect your finances by delivering clean water at a fraction of the cost of bottled water.

Together we can dramatically reduce our consumption of single use plastics and support our responsible travel ethos of ‘Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but boot-prints, keep nothing but memories’ whilst also supporting the ban of single use-plastic in Costa Rica.

As part of our commitment to the Future of Tourism, we proudly support the development of more of our trips in countries who are actively making a difference to sustainable tourism such as Costa Rica.

In 2017 Costa Rica ranked highly in the Sustainable Destinations Top 100. The Top 100 list celebrates efforts of tourism destinations for responsible and sustainable tourism. Nominators had to provide extensive information on their destination sustainability efforts.
