Overview

Whether you’re booked onto your first trek with us or you’re an Adventurous Ewe veteran, our training weekends are designed to enhance your trip preparation. These weekends offer the perfect opportunity to get those burning trip questions answered, ensure your gear is suitable, and pick up insider tips and tricks that can make a real difference while enjoying some great trekking time in the stunning Brecon Beacons. You’ll also get to know your Adventurous Ewe team, led by mountain trekking experts Jo Bradshaw and Sue Blunt, and meet fellow trekkers, building camaraderie before your big adventure. You’ll enjoy staying on a working farm at the family-owned Penstar Bunkhouse, a converted old barn.

Join us for an invaluable preparation experience!

Day 1

Arrive at 4pm at Penstar Bunkhouse in Libanus, Brecon Beacons. Opportunity to meet & mingle with your fellow like-minded trekkers.

Dinner – not included, please bring your own tapas style meal whereby we can share and chat over dinner.

Presentation / chat about:

  1. Choice and use of kit and equipment
  2. Packing tips
  3. Health, hygiene and hydration
  4. Teamwork

Included:

  • Mountain leaders
  • Overnight accommodation in bunkhouse (shared accommodation)
Day 2

Following breakfast you’ll enjoy a full day of walking in Brecon Beacons including Pen-Y-Fan (886m) and Corn Du (873m) – weather dependent. You’ll learn trekking techniques, using trekking poles, efficiency of moving on steeper ground, blister prevention, pack adjustments, etc.

Return to the bunkhouse for dinner – possible Nepali take away from Brecon Beacons to support local businesses.

  • Night trekking

Day 3

Night walk to dawn to help with night trekking and simulate summit night treks (weather dependent).

Return to the bunkhouse for breakfast.

  3. Sharing knowledge and personal experience

With a wealth of knowledge, experience, and new friendships, you’ll head home after lunch, excited for your next adventure ahead.

On booking your Expedition Training Weekend, you will receive all the exciting trek info via our free mobile travel app. You’ll have access to your itinerary, training guide, countdowns, live updates, contact info, weather forecasts, kit lists and much more at the touch of a button 24/7 via your mobile phone. No more unnecessary use of reams of paper and the need of carrying around documents with you. The app is free to download and all info is customary to your adventure ahead. A’ppy days.

With being a small family business we pride ourselves with providing personal, professional and friendly service. With being based in Wales, we have plenty of local knowledge ready to share with you. We appreciate that everyone has different levels of experience and reasons for wishing to embark on a mountain trek and therefore require varying levels of support and guidance. We’re here to help you every step of the way from the moment you join the flock all the way through to completing the challenge and beyond. Jim and Sue’s knowledge and expertise stems from dozens of years of travelling and exploring worldwide in order to fully support you in the lead up to your adventure.

Safety and Well-being

Adventurous Ewe puts the safety and well-being of you, our leaders & crew and the communities we visit at the centre of all our operations, always. Your safety and well-being is our top priority. 

Adventurous Ewe Leaders and Crew

You will be accompanied by Jo Bradshaw, Everest Summiteer and Sue Blunt, Adventurous Ewe Deputy Ewe. Both are first aid qualified and have extensive experience in leading multi-day mountain treks worldwide. They will be ultimately responsible for the running of the itinerary and the safety of your group. Leaders and Crew will carrying full safety equipment and mountain first aid kits with them at all times. Please note, these kits are for emergencies only so please come prepared with your own personal first aid items. 

Group size

We pride ourselves in small group travel to minimise the impact on the environment, to maximise your safety and well-being and to make your experience more authentic.

The minimum group size to run this Expedition Training Weekend is 10 people and the maximum group size is 18 people.

You are most welcome to join this training weekend as a solo trekkers or with a friend/s, family member/s or colleague/s.

Trip grading

The Expedition Training Weekend is graded as ‘Medium/Tough’ which is impacted by local weather conditions during the Winter season. It will involve a night trek in order to simulate a summit night during a mountain expedition. A good level of fitness will help you get the most out of this weekend.

 

Training

A trek training programme will be provided when join the team for the training weekend to help you with your preparations. The more you are prepared, the more you will enjoy this training weekend.

Kit

A full kit list will be provided on booking. Good kit can make the difference between a fantastic adventure and an uncomfortable one. Well worn in waterproof hiking boots are essential together with a good quality waterproof jacket AND trousers. Weather

The weather in the Welsh mountains can change rapidly so it is essential that you are prepared for all conditions including rain, wind and heat. In the week leading up to your trip we recommend checking the Mountain Weather Information Service

Accommodation

Two nights accommodation in Penstar Bunkhouse in Libanus, Brecon Beacons in dorm rooms is included in your training weekend. 

 

Getting there

You will need to make your own way to Penstar Bunkhouse in Libanus, Brecon Beacons either by car or train. 

The Bunkhouse is located 35 miles north of Cardiff and the M4 motorway, Penstar is easily reached by road. The area is well served by public transport with daily express coaches to Cardiff, the Midlands and Yorkshire. The nearest railway station is at Merthyr Tydfil and a bus connects Brecon to this railway station.

Food & Drinks

Two breakfasts and one dinner is included in your Training Weekend. 

  • Dinner on night 1 is not included. Please bring your own tapas style meal whereby we can share and chat over dinner.
  • Dinner on night 2 is included – possible Nepali take away from Brecon Beacons to support local businesses.
  • Please bring your own packed lunches x 2 for the training weekend.

If you have any dietary requirements, please let us know one month prior to your trip start date. 

Please also bring your own water bottles or camelbaks/platypus (or similar) and flasks (if you wish to take a hot drink during your trek) and refill in the hostel to avoid the need of purchasing plastic water bottles.

We may not be a huge global company but we’re passionate about playing our part and trying to make a huge difference collectively. Deposit: £55 per person is required on booking and is non-refundable.

Remaining balance: £160 per person is due no later than 6 weeks prior to training weekend start date.

Emergencies

Your Adventurous Ewe Leader/s and Crew will have a mobile phones and radios communications in case of emergencies. The team are trained to deal with these situations. Please ensure you listen to your Leader during these times and refrain from putting any posts on social media during this time. Should you find yourself unable to continue with the trek, your Leader and crew will make the necessary arrangements. Depending on the situation, you will be met by the support vehicle (depending on access) and you will be transferred back to your accommodation or nearby medical facility as required. RESPONSIBLE TRIP MANAGEMENT

 Adventurous Ewe is committed to delivering adventures in a responsible and ethical manner with sustainability at its core. We respect and aim to operate our trips to benefit local people, their economy and the environment!

Some of the ethical event management features embedded in our Expedition Training Weekend are:

  • Using local crew who are qualified Leaders and who are all extremely knowledgeable and experienced
  • Minimising plastic waste wherever possible as we refill water bottles and flasks
  • We do not use route markers on the mountain 
  • Where possible, our Leaders collect any rubbish seen on the mountain 
  • We operate a ‘leave no trace’ ethos
  • We stay in a locally owned and operated accommodation.

In addition, as part of the Snowdonia National Park Authority Partneriaeth Yr Wyddfa Partnership, we are an accredited Snowdon Visit Specialist. We are also a corporate partner of the Snowdonia Society and help support their vital work who since 1967 continue to work tirelessly to ensure that Snowdonia is well-protected, well-managed and enjoyed by all.
