Overview

There are very few places on Earth that compare to the incredible landscapes you’ll see with exploring the Sahara Desert. Running roughly north-south along Morocco’s eastern border with neighbouring Algeria, the Sahara Desert is the world’s largest hot desert. Opt to support either IAPWA or StreetVet and make your trek count towards supporting animal welfare. With two departure dates to choose from in November 2024.

This is your chance to immerse yourself in the amazing desert scenery as you journey over the High Atlas Mountains before starting your trek through wide-open plains, snaking wadis, dramatic plateaus, past tamarisk bushes, acacia trees, hidden villages, palm gorges, dry river-beds and moon-like sceneries. With the heat and the winds shaping the desert, the landscape is constantly on the move and evidence is easy to see with the patterns and formations woven across the lands.

Accompanied by local Berber Guides who will share their local knowledge and culture with pride. Honestly, they are truly incredible people, and you’ll learn so much trekking with them.

The local food prepared by your Berber crew is a delicious highlight awaiting your taste buds. Enjoy the immense flavours of homecooked cooked tagines and the warmth of freshly baked bread as it’s uncovered from desert ovens. Dining under the canvas of a traditional Bedouin tent is an appetising experience. Plus there’s plenty of evenings to sip your mint tea whilst marvelling at the abundance of twinkling stars in the dark night skies. A perfect trip to reconnect with the beauty of nature and be immersed in a nomadic way of life whilst making a difference to animal welfare here in the UK or around the world.

Leaving camp in your trails, you’ll wind you way towards the edge of some low dunes. The hottest part of the day is spent having lunch in the shade with time to relax and refill the water bottles. Once the hottest part of the day has passed you’ll continue across more dunes alternating between volcanic rock, sandy sheets and arid plains. To the South are rolling dunes as far as you can see and to the North the Hamada all whilst passing the occasional nomadic encampment. The nomadic people move here with their animals from the Atlas to the South in the Autumn when the snows begin. Another great day in the desert draws to an end with your camp punctuated at L’erg Zaher, the largest dunes in area.

Trekking: Approx 6 – 7 hours

Included
Accommodation: Desert camp

Day 5

Trek L’erg Zaher – Bouguern
This is a day you’ll remember as you set off before breakfast under a blanket of stars to trek to the summit of the highest dune for sunrise. As a new day awakes, immerse yourself in the golden colours of a Saharan sunrise and the peacefulness of the desert setting. It’s the perfect way to start the day. Returning to camp for another home-cooked breakfast, you’ll continue the day winding your way along dunes with views cross the desert landscape. Today sees little vegetation though lunch will be enjoyed under the shade of the very few trees found in this vastness. The desert air meanwhile makes the distances impossible to assess with panoramas as far as the eye can see that shimmer in the heat. Following another full day of trekking, your desert camp set amidst the ever impressive dunes is a welcomed sight to see.

Trekking: Approx 6 – 7 hours

Included
Accommodation: Desert camp

Day 6

Trek BouguernM’hamid
Today is tough one and the longest day of the entire trek as you journey towards some of the largest dunes in the area. The walking is tough going as sand fills yours boots and your feet sink into the dunes, however the climb is spectacular as you reach the highest point of the dune. Chief Ewe, Jim, has lived in Morocco so he has plenty of helpful tips available once you’ve booked on this exciting adventure.

Why go

Supporting animal welfare charities – IAPWA or StreetVet
You have the option to support either of the two fantastic animal welfare charities – IAPWA (International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals) or StreetVet.

IAPWA (International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals)
“Is a UK-registered animal welfare charity dedicated to creating a better future for animals in need. Our first project, established in 2009, is based in Borneo, where we provide a lifeline to thousands of dogs and cats every year in need of veterinary care and support. Our companion animal programmes have since developed in other countries, including Romania and Penang Island.

Our passion for all animals has also seen us develop many partnerships and launch campaigns to help other species. Wherever there is suffering, we aim to make a difference and with your support we can continue to protect and improve the welfare of animals worldwide.”

StreetVet
“Is a multi-award winning registered charity delivering free essential veterinary care and services to the pets of people experiencing homelessness in multiple locations across the UK. Homelessness is a growing problem in the UK and an increasing number of those experiencing homelessness have dogs. The bond between man homelss people and their dogs is profound and the health and wellbeing of their canine campions is often a major priority for their owners. Life on the streets makes it difficult to access the fundamental vet care required to ensure the health and vitality these dogs deserve. Find out how your support makes a real difference to people experiencing homelessness and their pets watch our 1 minute video here.”

The terrain will vary from hot sand to rocky terrain. Climbing dunes will prove tough, particularly in the hot conditions. Weather

Even in the winter months of November through to April the Saharan Desert is warm in the desert during the day with temperatures expected around 20 – 25°C and rising to 30°C or more around mid-day.

In the evening the temperature will drop to an average of 5 – 10°C but can reach lower than this overnight. The evenings and nights can be chilly which is a more noticeable change from when trekking in the warm daytime temperatures.

Rain is rare in the desert but not unheard of and short-lived storms bringing rain can occur.

Accommodation

All your accommodation is included. Your first night is in a local guesthouse at Ait-Ben-Haddou.

Whilst on trek in the Sahara desert there will be a total of 5 nights wild camping. This camping is fully supported with all kit and bags being carried by camels, as well as tents, a mess tent and a toilet tent. You’ll have a local crew supporting you including a cook. Mattresses are provided, however given the current times, we recommend bringing your own thermarest or sleeping mat and travel pillow (or use a down jacket as your pillow). You’ll need a sleeping bag with a comfort rated -5°C and -10°C and a sleeping bag liner is optional.

Your final night is in a traditional Riad in Marrakech.

If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single trekker of the same sex. Single hotel rooms and/or single tents are available for a supplementary cost for most nights dependent on availability.

If you are planning on extending your adventure, we can help with recommendations and/or bookings.

Food & drinks

All food whilst on trek is purchased locally and cooked by your local cook who accompanies you on the trek. Breakfasts are continental style, with tea and coffee, muesli, bread, jam, honey and soft cheese.

A morning snack is also provided and this usually consists of a type of Moroccan ‘trail mix’ with dried figs and dates, peanuts, sugar coated peanuts and other nuts.

Lunch is a packed lunch that you will make daily after breakfast. There’s an array of fresh salad items – onions, tomatoes, green peppers, grated carrot, green-beans, with tinned sweetcorn or peas with fresh bread. Hard and soft cheeses, tinned fish, olives, biscuits and bread are also available.

Dinner starts off with soup and bread. The main course is usually rice, pasta, couscous, spaghetti, with a vegetable stew (or tagine) consisting of fresh ingredients such as onions, potatoes, carrots, green peppers, zucchinis, turnips, parsnips, green beans, and peas. There may be some meat (usually chicken, lamb or beef), however meat is not prominent in the menu. All dishes come with traditional sauces which are rarely (spicy) hot. To round off dinner, there is the usual range of hot drinks including the Berber speciality of mint tea.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. You should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as your complimentary Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Please let us know in advance of any dietary requirements or allergies and we will do our best to accommodate.

Water-to-go bottle

Adventurous Ewe has partnered with Water-to-Go, a filtration system that eliminates over 99.99% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source – for more info please click here. Adventurous Ewe trekkers will receive a free Water-to-Go bottle when departing for our Sahara Desert trek, and better still, 15% of the purchase value for replacement filters will be donated to our environmental charity partner, Cool Earth.
