Since the COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on local communities and livelihoods across the planet, we’re keen to promote adventures in countries that are actively working towards sustainable tourism and conservation projects. Jordan has shown both ingenuity and commitment for nearly two decades in embracing an environmentally friendly approach. This approach extends both to an assortment of environmental challenges and to tourism.

We’re passionate about exploring off the beaten track routes in order to help communities who are in the shadow of mainstream tourist destinations. We also aim to create an adventure which is about discovery, immersing yourself in fascinating environments, customs and cultures and provides an understanding of history and people.

Flexible date changes
If you need to change your booking 60 days or more before the start date you can make flexible date change to another trip, subject to availability, without incurring any admin costs. If you need to cancel your booking, you will be issued with a credit note to the value of your payment that you can use for another event of your choice, subject to availability. 

Financial protection
If your adventure needs to be cancelled for any reason, like say a global pandemic, you won’t be left stuck and you’ll be offered plenty of alternative options thanks to our financial protection through our insurance. What’s more, in the very unlikely event of Adventurous Ewe going under, you’ll get your money back and be repatriated if you were on a trip at the time.

All bookings can be made online with Mastercard, Visa and debit card or via BACS. You can also opt to pay via monthly instalments. We use WorldPay to handle all our online payments as it is a payment platform which is a global leader in payment processing offering superior security for both you and us as a company.

Jim and Sue’s knowledge and expertise stems from dozens of years of travelling and exploring the destinations that we visit in order to fully support you in the lead up to your adventure.

Flight from UK to Queen Alia International Airport, Jordan

On signing up for the trip, we will provide you with the recommended flights to book or alternately, we can book the flights for you through our ATOL & ABTA protected Flight Agent at an additional cost. 

Flights are not included in your package to give you the flexibility to travel from your nearest airport, use your frequent flyer points or extend your stay in Jordan if you wish.

The recommended flights for this will include airport transfers in Jordan.  There are direct flights from London and some major airports across the UK. Flights are operated by British Airways, Royal Jordanian, Easyjet & Ryan Air and cost upwards £350pp economy return depending on which flights and when you book.

All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid for 6 months beyond the intended length of stay. For the latest entry requirements into Jordan, please visit https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/jordan/entry-requirements.

Visas are required by all visitors entering Jordan. Single entry visas valid for 1 month and can be obtained by most nationalities on arrival at the airport in Amman for approximately JOD40. It can be significantly more expensive to acquire your visa from the embassy in your home country. Please note that there are ATM’s available in Amman airport and also currency exchanges.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it’s important that you check for the latest info by visiting the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website. 

Travel Insurance is an important part of any booking. It is compulsory that everyone who travels with us has taken out adequate travel insurance which includes, among other things, cover for the full value of your trip, medical (emergency, evacuation and repatriation) arrangements, activities undertaken, personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects and COVID-19 travel cover.

For UK residents we have partnered with Campbell & Irvine Direct to provide you with a travel insurance. If you would like to obtain cover for your trip please feel free to contact specialist Insurance Brokers, Campbell Irvine Direct for a quote.

Vaccinations

There are currently no mandatory vaccination requirements. Recommended vaccinations include: Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid. For the most up to date info on vaccinations, please consult with your GP or travel healthcare practitioner 8 weeks in advance of travel. Allergies

If you have a severe allergy please inform us at the time of booking. We will do all we can to help, but unfortunately we are unable to guarantee an allergy free environment on this trip. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as ‘adrenaline auto-injectors’ are not carried as standard by AE leaders and crew. Whilst your leader is aware of our trekkers medical history, please also inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

Adventurous Ewe puts the safety and well-being of you, our leaders & crew and the communities we visit at the centre of all our operations, always. Your safety and well-being is our top priority. The Trek to Ancient Petra is intentionally challenging and requires individual preparation as the trip is designed to take you out of your every-day comfort zone and achieve something great. Rest assured we have a thorough Safety Management System, indepth risk assessments and risk management systems in place.

You will be accompanied by certified Adventurous Ewe Leader and Local Guide for the trek together with a local Bedouin support crew. They’re a friendly bunch with a huge level of care and a great sense of humour. Rest assured they are fully experienced and remote first aid qualified. They will be ultimately responsible for the running of the itinerary and the safety of your group and are extremely proud and passionate to share their vast knowledge, culture and way of life with you.

Leaders will carry safety equipment and first aid kits with them at all times. Please note, these kits are for emergencies only so please come prepared with your own personal first aid items.

The Leaders and Crew will also be in constant radio communication throughout your trek.

We pride ourselves in small group travel to minimise the impact on the environment, to maximise your safety and wellbeing and to make your experience more authentic.

The minimum group size for the Jordan desert trek to run is 8 people and the maximum group size is 24 people.

You are most welcome to join the Trek to Ancient Petra as a group of friends, family or colleagues or as a solo traveller. You are also welcome to use this trip as a fundraiser for the charity of your choice.

If you have a group of over 8 people, we would be more than happy to run a private trip for your team, your charity or your company.

The Trek to Ancient Petra is graded as ‘Moderate to Challenging’. You’re in for an active trip! Whilst previous experience isn’t essential for getting involved, a good level of fitness will really help you get the most out of this trek. If you can imagine yourself trekking for 5 days on the trot whilst carrying your day-pack and enjoying the delights of camping in the desert; this is the adventure for you. Although this trek is not technically difficult, you should be an experienced walker and have a head for heights. Your route follows a well-established trail though there are some sections walking along ridgelines.

Preparation is key to help you get the most enjoyment and reward from this trek. A good level of fitness, endurance and some gritty determination will help you conquer each day.

Please come prepared for trekking in the heat as temperatures will be very warm during the day and can reach up to 32ºC, however the evenings in camp will be quite cool.

A bespoke training programme will be provided when join this trip to help you with your preparations. This includes info, videos and an exclusive discount code for a 28 day kettlebell training programme & app which is ideal for strength and endurance training for those short on time. Plus it has great nutritional tips. The more you are prepared, the more you will enjoy the challenge.

We have a variety of tailored training weekends available to ensure you’re fully prepared for your trekking adventure. These training weekends are the perfect way to help you gauge your fitness and training progress under the careful guidance of our experienced leaders. Plus the leaders will chat through your specific trip and also provide guidance and tips relating to clothing and equipment, health and wellbeing, packing, camping, trekking skills (walking on different terrain/using trekking poles/etc), teamwork and much more to ensure you are fully prepared and ready for your adventure ahead.

We predominantly host our training weekends in Snowdonia given the wide variety of terrain available to practice and where Chief Ewe’s, Jim or Sue, can meet you too. It’s a great way for you to meet fellow members of the flock and ask any questions, no matter how big or small. We’re here to make sure you’re ready. Rest assured any equipment that we supply will be hygienically cleaned and sanitised and was not used 72 hours before you use it and will not be used for the next 72 hours.

The best period for trekking in Jordan is in the late autumn through to early spring season, from October through to mid April. Outside of this period it can be very hot, with temperatures, rising to 40°C in July and August. In October and in April, the maximum daytime temperature is likely to be in the high twenties or low thirties °C, falling as low as 10°C at night. Heading into November the temperatures begin to cool and by December/January, typical daytime maximum temperatures are around 12 – 15 °C falling as low as 5°C at night.

In 2021, the important month of Ramadan will be in progress from 12th April – 11th May and in 2022, from 2nd April – 1st May. Eid ul-Fitr festival will be held directly at its conclusion for 3 – 4 days.

Ramadan is a festival of sacrifice where the devout refrain from eating or drinking during daylight hours. During Ramadan, business hours are shortened, including opening hours at some tourist attractions. Alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and many restaurants will be closed.

While you should expect some delays and inconveniences during this period, the month is a fantastic opportunity to travel in a Muslim country and witness this unique period, particularly the nightly celebrations when the sun sets and the fast is broken. Please note that although the Eid ul-Fitr festival can also be a fascinating time to travel it’s a period of national holiday. Most government offices and businesses will be closed and some tourist site opening hours may be affected.

Hotels (3 nights twin/triple share rooms) and desert camp (5 nights)

You will spend 3 nights in hotels. The hotels for Amman and Petra are 3-star hotels and for your final night at the Dead Sea you will stay in a 4-star hotel with a swimming pool. All rooms are on a twin share basis and have ensuite facilities. Some hotels have more facilities than others however it is always good to keep in mind that the star rating in Jordan is quite different to what you may expect at home.  Sometimes we may use less centrally located hotels in the interests of comfort.

Accommodation in Petra is limited and demands on the infrastructure are high; this creates occasional problems with hot water and plumbing for all hotels.  In general, the hotels in Petra are of an older style and more basic in comparison with the rest of Jordan. 

Single room supplements are available for this trip for the hotel stays however we are unable to guarantee availability. Please enquire at the time of booking for details and up-to-date prices.

Traditional Bedouin tents will be set up at your campsite and smaller tents are provided for sleeping. You are also welcome to sleep out under the stars as well. Each campsite will be set up prior to your arrival. Whilst camping please be aware that although some campsites have plumbed toilets and running water, there are no showers and facilities are basic, however this is part of the experience and a great opportunity to switch off from the digital world. The campsites also provide you with the chance to immerse yourself in the Bedouin culture and lifestyle.

Food

The food provided is plentiful, often local in style and freshly-cooked, and will give you plenty of energy. Lunch will varying from a buffet-style lunch-stop to packed lunches. Dinners are generally eaten in camp or at the hotel, depending on accommodation. In some regions there may be less variety than you are used to, and in others fresh meat or produce can be harder to come by.

Any meals not included are listed in the itinerary and are generally on travel days or where there is access to local restaurants, giving you the opportunity to explore and try other culinary experiences and support local businesses! There is always something to suit different budgets.

Being vegetarian or having other dietary requirements is not usually a problem provided you let us know well in advance. Please do not expect as greater variety as you would have at home – at times you will be in very rural or remote areas and among people of a different culture who may not understand your requirements, however willing they are to help.

If you know there are plenty of foods you cannot eat we strongly recommend you bring extra snacks from home so you can top up your energy supply. Please feel free to speak to us if you have any further queries or questions.

Water

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. Whilst trekking, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as your free Adventurous Ewe Water-To-Go bottle which you will receive on departure) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Adventurous Ewe has partnered with Water-to-Go, a filtration system that eliminates over 99.99% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source – for more info please click here.

Adventurous Ewe trekkers will receive a free Water-to-Go bottle when departing for our Jordan Trek, and better still, 15% of the purchase value for replacement filters will be donated to our environmental charity partner, Cool Earth.

Deposit of £175 per person is required on booking.
Remaining balance of £1350 per person is due for payment no later than 5 weeks prior to the trip start date.

Your Adventurous Ewe Leader/s and Crew will have a mobile phones and radios communications in case of emergencies. The team are trained to deal with these situations. Please ensure you listen to your Leader during these times and refrain from putting any posts on social media. Should you find yourself unable to continue with the trek, your Leader and crew will make the necessary arrangements. Depending on the situation, you will be met by the support vehicle (depending on access) and you will be transferred back to your accommodation or nearby medical facility as required.
